Memorization is not easy. Some people can do this easily, but every person has his or her own set of learning abilities, and quite often memorization may not be one of them. However, this is a skill that can be improved, so that we do not have to worry about it. Here are five tips that can help.
1. Listen to Your Song
Play a record of the song that you are presently learning and also record what you play along with the music so that you can hear what you have learned and played. Listen to this repeatedly. If you want to know any piece of music, you must hear it till you are sick of doing so. Listening is also the major key to play piano songs by ear.
2. Think about it
At any given moment you should be able to recall your song, sing it aloud, or even hear it in your head. Practice this by finding the time to listen to the recording you have, until you can “hear” the song entirely, irrespective of where you are.
3. Close your eyes
Look at your music or chart when you sit down at the piano, and then remove the page from your view and close your eyes. See how far you can go before you have forgotten what you need to play further. Grab the music, look at it, and then start all over again, and see whether you can go further than you did the last time.
4. Practice it in random order or even backward
Start at any point in the song, except at the beginning. Start from the last measure and go forward, or start at the middle point of the song. The good news is there are hundred of songs have same a chord progression with just four basic piano chords.
5. Play when you are feeling nervous
Are you sure that you have got it down pat? Gather some audience from friends and family, and try to play your song for them. Are you able to play, even when you are nervous?
It is important to be relaxed. When you are not under stress, it will be easier to play. If you have forgotten what comes next, and do not have the music sheet in front of you, finish with a flourish, as if you had always planned to do, and then jump back to the part that you can now remember. If you are a beginner player, I highly recommended you start with some easy piano songs first to play confidently.
